Treating Muscle Pain With Dysport®
Clenching and grinding (Bruxism) teeth is a habit that affects many people. Stress Anxiety Crooked or broken down teeth along with sleep apnoea can be contributing factors to bruxism. The effects of clenching and grinding can be serious for sufferers. It commonly causes teeth to wear, which can lead to fracturing or even loss of teeth. It is also common for sufferers to experience headaches, sore jaws, stiff necks and even backaches.
Temporomandibular dysfunction is a problem in the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. This dysfunction may end up causing jaw pain, headaches, neck pain, limited mouth opening and clicking when moving the jaw. Problems in the temporomandibular joint may be caused by congenital abnormalities of the condyles, due to a bad form of biting or underlying problems such as bruxism. Bruxism is the habit of grinding or clenching teeth, usually during sleep. One of the possible solutions to bruxism is making a mouth guard, which is placed in the maxilla and will protect teeth and temporomandibular joint.
Wearing a custom made splint can be an effective way to prevent wear or tooth fractures that result from clenching and grinding teeth. Dysport® is an excellent alternative, or can be used in unison with a splint for severe cases . It is extremely effective to use muscle relaxants in the form of Dysport® to aide in relief from bruxism.
Small doses of Dysport® are injected into the large muscle that controls the jaw (masseter muscle), effectively weakening it enough to stop involuntary clenching and grinding and aides in weakening the muscle memory. It is a safe and approved method of relaxing the muscle thus reducing the wear of teeth as well as muscle aches and tightness. It does not affect your ability to chew, eat, drink, swallow, talk or make full facial expressions. A series of Dysport® of treatments over a short period of time may be required to have the full weakening effect of the muscle.
